Artificial Turf

Artificial turf in Las Vegas, installed so it survives the heat

Turf does not fail because of the turf. It fails because of what somebody did or did not do underneath it.

Artificial turf is the single most requested landscape change in this valley right now, and it is also the one where the gap between a good install and a cheap one is widest.

Here is the uncomfortable part: the turf itself is a commodity. Most installers in Las Vegas are buying similar product from a handful of the same manufacturers. What you are actually paying for is excavation depth, base material, compaction, drainage and edge work, and those are exactly the things that are invisible on the day the job finishes.

Why the base decides everything

Turf laid on an under-prepared base looks identical on day one and starts telling on you by the second summer. Low spots collect and hold water. The surface ripples where compaction was uneven. Edges lift where they were not anchored properly. Pet areas start to smell because the drainage was never specified for it.

None of that is repairable without pulling the turf up, which is why the cheap install is rarely the cheap outcome.

What we do differently, specifically

We excavate to a depth set by the site rather than a standard number, compact in lifts, and specify base and infill for what the area is actually for. A putting green, a pet run and an ornamental front yard are three different builds, not one build with three names.

We also plan where turf should not go. Full-afternoon western exposure with no shade and bare feet is a combination worth designing around rather than selling into.

Turf is usually part of something larger

Almost nobody wants only turf. It sits next to pavers, against a pool deck, around planting beds, and it changes the irrigation plan for everything that is left. Because we build the rest of the yard too, the transitions are designed rather than negotiated between two contractors on site.

What this covers

Where Artificial Turf Works, and Where It Does Not

Artificial turf works well in front yards, backyards, pet areas, pool surrounds, play areas and as putting greens. It works less well in large, open areas in full sun with no shade and heavy daily use, where the surface takes a beating and gets very hot.

We would rather tell you that before the install than after.

Why Turf Makes Sense in Las Vegas

Water policy has moved hard against non-functional grass in southern Nevada, and that is a large part of why artificial turf is mainstream here. Water rules change, so check the current terms with the local water authority before you commit.

Heat, and What Actually Helps

Synthetic turf gets hotter than natural grass in direct Las Vegas sun. That is real, and it is the first thing a careful buyer should ask about.

What reduces the heat is a combination of choices: infill type, fiber color (lighter colors run cooler), shade across part of the lawn, and rinsing on hot afternoons. Not every choice helps equally, and we explain which ones matter for your yard.

Choosing a Turf

Pile height, face weight, fiber shape, backing, drainage rate and infill type all change how the turf behaves in use. A pet yard needs odor control and fast drainage. A putting green needs a true, fine surface. A landscape lawn needs a softer, more natural look and enough density for foot traffic. These are three different products, and the right one depends on how the area will be used.

Every part of the job, under one team

Turf installation

Excavation, base preparation, compaction, drainage, seaming and infill. The visible product is the last ten percent of the job and the first ninety is what decides how it looks in year five.

Base and drainage

Turf over a poorly compacted or poorly draining base ripples, settles and holds odor. In this valley it also cooks. The base is where the job is won.

Putting greens

Backyard greens with real contouring, proper cup placement and a surface speed you choose, rather than a flat rectangle of green carpet.

Pet areas

Drainage and infill specified for pets, because the standard specification is not built for it and the difference shows up as smell within one summer.

Turf around pools and hardscape

Clean transitions into coping, pavers and concrete. Bad edges are the first thing that gives away a cheap turf job and the first thing to lift.

Common questions

What homeowners ask us first

Does artificial turf get too hot in Las Vegas?

Surface temperature is a real consideration here and anyone who tells you otherwise has not stood on a turf lawn in July. It is managed through infill choice, color, shade planning and where you place it, so the areas people actually stand on are handled deliberately. We would rather design the layout around that than sell you turf for a spot that will never be comfortable.

How long does artificial turf last here?

Lifespan claims on turf are mostly marketing, because the variable that decides it is the base underneath and the UV exposure, not the product label. We specify the base to the site and tell you what we are installing and why.

Is turf cheaper than a real lawn over time?

Over a long enough period the water and maintenance side of the comparison usually favors turf in this climate, but the honest answer is that it depends on your square footage and how long you plan to stay. We will run the comparison for your actual yard rather than quote a generic figure.

Can you put turf over an existing lawn?

Not properly. The organic layer has to come out or it decomposes and settles under the turf, and you get an uneven surface within a couple of seasons. If somebody offers to lay turf straight over grass, that is the shortcut that produces the ripples you see in older installs.
