Retaining walls and terracing in Las Vegas

A retaining wall is a structure holding back several tons of soil. Most of the failures we see were built as decoration.

Walls fail for one reason far more often than any other: water. Soil behind a wall gets wet, gets heavier, and pushes. A wall without drainage behind it is holding back not just soil but hydrostatic pressure, and it will lean, then bulge, then go.

So the part of the job you cannot see is the part that matters. Drainage aggregate behind the wall, a perforated pipe with somewhere to go, geogrid tied back into the slope where the height calls for it, and a footing that does not move.

When it needs an engineer

In Clark County, walls above a certain height, walls carrying a surcharge like a driveway or a pool, and tiered walls close together all need engineering and permits. Those thresholds exist because that is where the failure stops being cosmetic.

We will tell you which side of that line your wall sits on before quoting it, not after.

Terracing as a design move

On a sloped lot, two or three low walls beat one tall one almost every time. Cheaper to build, easier to permit, and it turns dead slope into usable planting beds instead of a retaining problem.

What this covers

Every part of the job, under one team

Engineered walls

Walls above the threshold, carrying surcharge or tiered, designed by an engineer and permitted.

Drainage behind the wall

Aggregate, perforated pipe and an outlet. The invisible half that decides whether it stands.

Terracing

Two or three low walls instead of one tall one, converting slope into planting rather than into a problem.

Seat walls and low walls

Under the engineering threshold, still built on a proper footing, doubling as seating around a fire feature or patio.

Facing and finish

Block, stacked stone or stucco chosen to match the house rather than the catalog.

Common questions

What homeowners ask us first

How tall can a wall be before it needs engineering?

It depends on height, surcharge and tiering, and the thresholds are set by Clark County. We check before quoting rather than after.

My wall is leaning. Can it be repaired?

Sometimes the facing can be rebuilt. If the lean is from hydrostatic pressure and there is no drainage behind it, rebuilding the face just buys time.
